The Department of Health has launched a new hygiene programme designed to tackle MRSA in the hospitals that require the biggest improvements.
Health minister Ann Keen stated that the NHS has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to infections, but despite major progress being made to combat this problem in recent years, some hospital trusts have not advanced as far as others.
"We must reduce MRSA infections across the whole of the NHS so the new objective will introduce the toughest challenges for underperforming organisations," she remarked.
Under the initiative, organisations with the highest infection rates will be required to "make the biggest reductions", while those that are already performing well will be encouraged to continue looking for ways to make further cuts.
The NHS website indicates that ensuring "very high" hygiene standards among hospital staff is one of the key ways to prevent the spread of MRSA, as well as keeping the hospital itself clean and dry.
