Register as an Dietitian
Tuesday 15th December 2009
A medical professional has said that weight problems among youngsters in Bolton may be declining.
Specialist paediatric dietician Heather Norris claimed that, since 2006-07, the percentage of overweight and obese children in the town have reduced slightly, the Bolton News reports.
She went on to describe this as an "achievement", noting that the causes of such problems are complex and tackling them requires a "multi-dimensional" approach.
Ms Norris added: "To achieve change, nothing less than involving the entire society in a fundamental rethinking of its social and economic priorities is essential."
While treatment programmes are important, an effort from all parts of society is required in the fight against excess weight, she claimed.
Her comments were made after NHS Bolton - which provides healthcare services to more than 260,000 people - suggested that the problem is "significant" and argued that a fundamental culture change is required if youngsters are not to become overweight or obese.
