Plans for the construction of a centre for biomedical research have been revealed.
The UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation (UKCMRI) announced that the facility, which is to be located in London, will be constructed on a 3.6-acre site in the north of the city.
Among the organisations set to be housed there are the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council.
Work on the development is to begin in 2011 and is due to be completed by early 2015 at the outset.
Professor Sir Paul Nurse, chairman of scientific planning at UKCMRI, which is a publicly-funded organisation that seeks to improve human health, said it will be the "most exciting project" for UK biomedical research over the course of the next half century.
He went on to state: "Its ambition is immense and the promise of what can be achieved will excite and energise the global scientific community."
