Refer an Hospital Doctor
Monday 7th December 2009
Foreigners working as hospital doctors may benefit from a recommendation made by the UK Border's Agency Migration Advisory Committee (MAC).
The board, which is a non-statutory, non-time-limited, non-departmental public body, suggested that highly-skilled non-European Union nationals should no longer require a masters degree to work in the UK.
Welcoming the call, chair of the BMA's Junior Doctor Committee Dr Shree Datta described it as "pleasing".
She remarked: "The committee is recommending that medical degrees should once again be awarded points in the tier one points-based immigration system."
Dr Datta added that the government should now implement the MAC's suggestions in order to prevent an "exodus" of UK-trained doctors from the NHS.
According to the expert, the BMA has taken hundreds of calls from international doctors and medical students concerned over the prospect of having to uproot their families and there is already a problem of understaffing in some UK hospitals.
