Biomedical scientists are currently involved in a project which could lead to significant changes in the way cancer patients are treated, stv.tv reports.
A team at Glasgow's Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, which cost £105 million to construct, are leading the project.
The research is targeting people suffering from advanced stages of the disease who are not responding to other forms of intervention.
It is hoped that a network of 19 Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres (ECMCs) will be created.
Head of the Glasgow ECMC Professor Jim Cassidy said that the medications being trialled should not be viewed as "wonder drugs".
He added: "All of these are experiments and that's how we put it to patients, that they are taking part in experiments of new agents."
The hope is that these agents become standard therapies, the expert went on to say.
Professor Cassidy claimed that these are "exciting times" for cancer research.
