Register as an Dietitian
Wednesday 2nd December 2009
Water does not possess supernatural qualities that improve a person's health and appearance, one dietician has said.
The Daily Mail quoted Sian Porter of the British Dietetic Association - which has more than 6,500 members - as saying there is nothing particularly special about the liquid as her organisation debunked the idea that it can help improve skin hydration.
"Water doesn't have magical powers," she remarked. "It is calorie free and a good choice for that reason. But if you don't like it, get your fluid elsewhere."
Furthermore, Ms Porter warned that water can actually have a negative impact if too much is consumed.
Drinking more than eight glasses a day is dangerous, she said, as it can lead to hyponatraemia - a potentially fatal condition that causes swelling of the brain.
According to the NHS Evidence website, acute onset of this condition needs to be diagnosed and then treated quickly.
