A study conducted by a team of biomedical researchers in Japan has suggested that a gene passed on by fathers may be responsible for shortening the lifespan of offspring.
The findings were based on observing the effects on mice of having two biological mothers and no father.
According to the experts, these animals lived around 30 per cent longer than typical mice with male and female parents.
However, it is not yet known whether the effect also applies to humans.
Commenting on the research, its leader Professor Tomohiro Kono from the Tokyo University of Agriculture - which was established in 1891 - said it may provide answers concerning whether longevity in mammals is controlled by the genome composition of only one or both parents.
The expert went on to state: "We have known for some time that women tend to live longer than men in almost all countries worldwide and that these sex-related differences in longevity also occur in many other mammalian species."
