In order to improve cancer diagnosis, the NHS needs greater funding for radiography equipment, it has been claimed.
According to Professor Mike Richards, this would improve survival rates among patients, the BBC reports.
He made his comments after producing a report which found disparities across the country in terms of how cancer sufferers are treated.
For example, lung cancer sufferers in Kensington and Chelsea were found to be three times more likely to live for 12 months or more than those in Herefordshire.
Lung cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Britain, Cancer Research UK suggests.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, the expert remarked: "Class or affluence might be a factor - but it is only a factor, parts of the north of England, quite deprived areas, actually have good one-year survival rates."
As well as an increase in radiography equipment, Professor Richards recommended that more screening, faster drug approval and extra training should be implemented.
