Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Thursday 26th November 2009
Despite the ongoing financial pressures being felt across the UK, the NHS should not reduce spending on medical technologies, including those concerning cardiac health.
This is according to the Medical Technology Group (MTG), which has warned that the country is falling behind other European countries.
Director of Heart Research UK and chairwoman of the MTG Barbara Harpham said: "The NHS is under pressure to cut costs, but slashing budgets is counterproductive as modern technologies help thousands of people with long-term conditions stay in work or education and out of hospital."
In a 12-point action plan, the MTG - which is a coalition of patient groups, research charities and medical device manufacturers - has made a number of policy recommendations.
For example, it suggests that patients should have access to further information to enable them to make a more informed choice.
Also, the right of people to take advantage of technologies recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence should be made legally enforceable, it claimed.
