Refer an Operating Department Practitioner
Thursday 26th November 2009
People with operation department practitioner jobs may be working alongside a new robotic device.
The Oxford Cancer Centre has installed an electronic surgery system which is intended to be used on used on patients having keyhole operations.
Costing £2 million, the device has four arms that are controlled by surgeons who sit away from the people being operated on.
Commenting on the technology, Nuffield professor of surgery at Oxford University Freddie Hamdy said: "I'm delighted that we've been able to obtain the latest surgical robot for Oxford. This is a really exciting development."
He added that, because there is a high level of control, the operations performed in this way are minimally invasive and so patients recover more quickly.
According to the medical expert, the device will be used at the hospital - which has a suite of ten new operating theatres - in around two to three procedures each day.
