The health of many people with asthma is at risk because they do not know how or when to use inhalers, it has been warned.
Pharmacist Angela Chalmers told the Daily Mail that many people are taking medication incorrectly, with common mistakes being to breathe in too fast or not strongly enough.
With over five million Britons receiving treatment for the condition, the expert explained that 90 per cent of patients have been found to not be using inhalers properly.
"When a patient is diagnosed, there is a lot of information to take in, which can be misunderstood or forgotten," she explained.
The news source also highlighted the fact that a recent Belfast City Hospital study revealed a fifth of asthmatics use more than their prescribed medication, while 35 per cent use half or less.
According to the NHS, the condition caused more than 1,300 deaths in the UK in 2005.
