Hospital doctor receives award for MRSA finding

A hospital doctor has received an award from a medical research charity after a discovery that helped reduce the spread of MRSA.
Dr Tammy Angel developed a programme alongside nurse Anne Carroll in order to cut the number of inappropriate catheterisations, according to the Watford Observer.
It came after the pair identified a link between the superbug and catheters, with the latter associated with longer stays in hospital and a range of infections.
"We introduced the use of bladder scanners that could accurately measure bladder volume and assess whether a catheter was needed, or if less invasive measures could be used instead," said Dr Angel.
Bupa Foundation awarded West Hertfordshire NHS Trust £15,000 in order to help continue the improvements, with Dr Angel being honoured at a ceremony in London.
The charity donates approximately £2.5 million each year in a bid to further medical research and support healthcare initiatives in the UK.
