Suppressing anger can result in a higher risk of heart attacks among men, it has been found.
Research led by a team at the Stress Research Institute in Stockholm and published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health showed that men who do not openly express anger if they feel they are treated unfairly at work have double the risk of cardiac arrest.
Commenting on the findings, study leader Dr Constanze Leineweber said: "There has been research before pointing in this direction but the surprise is that the association between pent-up anger and heart disease was such a strong one."
While stress itself is not a factor in heart disease, people's responses to it, such as overeating or smoking, can affect health, he added.
He went on to claim that men cannot help how they behave in conflict situations and they react instinctively.
Recently, a cardiac monitoring device known as the AVIVO Mobile Patient Management System was given CE mark approval.
