A biomedical scientist from the University of London has suggested steps can be taken to better control the current swine flu outbreak.
The BBC quoted Dr Ronald Cutler, deputy department director at Queen Mary, as indicating there are measures which can be put in place to combat pandemics as a new strain - which is resistant to anti-viral medication Tamiflu - begins to spread.
"Shortening the time taken to produce new vaccines and improving the methods to control and treat the disease while vaccines are being made would be a way forward," he remarked.
The comments were made following what are thought to be the first cases worldwide of person-to-person transmission of the new swine flu strain, which have occurred at Cardiff's University Hospital of Wales.
Dr Carter's college is considered to be one of the UK's leading higher education institutions, ranking in the top 13 in recent lists from Times Higher Education and the Guardian.
