Pharmacist warns against stockpiling medicines

A pharmacist has told people in Swindon there is no need for them to hoard medicines as it is unlikely that local pharmacies will run out.
The Swindon Advertiser quoted Toni Lloyd of the NHS as saying supply issues in the area are "very rare", with stock typically replenished twice a day.
And he suggested that problems can arise for the environment when consumers obtain too much medicine, indicating that they should only seek to meet their present requirements rather than planning for improbable circumstances.
"Once medicine leaves the pharmacy, it cannot be recycled, so prevent waste by only ordering what you need," Mr Lloyd remarked.
The comments were made as it was revealed NHS Swindon, which provides health services for more than 200,000 individuals in the borough and Shrivenham, had been forced to pay out an extra £600,000 over the last year as a result of patients reordering prescriptions unnecessarily.
