UK medical jobs skills shortage 'probable with immigration policy'

The British Medical Association (BMA) has noted that prime minister Gordon Brown's new immigration policies announced yesterday (November 12th) could lead to a shortage in people qualified for UK medical jobs.
Under the regulations, individuals from outside the European Union will be unable to take up positions such as hospital consultants.
Chairman of the BMA Dr Terry John said: "It is … important that changes to UK immigration rules do not damage our ability to recruit the doctors we need to staff our NHS."
According to Dr John, there are still a range of UK medical jobs that are currently unfilled, such as junior doctors and consultants.
The Scottish government has condemned the move, saying that it fails to take into consideration the needs of the country.
Other changes outlined by the prime minister in his speech included deporting immigrants that receive a criminal conviction with a sentence of at least 12 months.
