Register as an Dietitian
Wednesday 4th November 2009
Dietician job worker Susanne Eriksson has commented on her recent research showing children who drink full-fat milk on average weigh less than those who do not.
Ms Eriksson remarked that the results of the survey, conducted through the Sahlgrenska Academy at Sweden's University of Gothenburg, were "interesting" but that the study has not revealed the reason behind them.
She said one reason may be that those who drink full-fat milk eat other foods also affecting their weight.
"Another possible explanation is that children who do not drink full-fat milk drink more soft drinks instead," the expert added.
In the study of eight-year-olds, those consuming the fatty drink were shown to weigh just over four kg less on average that those who opted for low-fat or medium-fat.
Obesity in children is difficult to define, according to the British Heart Foundation, due to growing bones and race and gender issues.
However, according to a newly developed National BMI classification for children - which is different to that of adults - the 2006 Health Survey for England found that 31 per cent of boys and 29 per cent of girls between two and 15 were overweight or obese.
