Pharmacy job worker Allison White of Durham was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukaemia in July and has since helped organise an evening to aid research into the disease.
While the 32-year-old was in hospital her family and friends held a fundraising event in aid of Leukaemia Research UK at Evenwood Workingmen's Club, the Northern Echo reported.
Ms White was able to leave the hospital for a couple of hours in order to make an appearance and said she was "overwhelmed" by how many people were there.
She added: "My cousin, Elaine Smith, shaved her head for sponsorship and we raised £2,300. That is our focus now, to raise money for research."
According to the news provider, the family have already lost two members to leukaemia, but are trying to stay positive by focusing on making money for and creating awareness of the illness.
Leukaemia involves an excess of white blood cells and is the most common cancer in children, accounting for one in three cases.
