Pharmacists and patients preparing for EPS

Pharmacy job workers in north-east Essex have begun handing out leaflets and asking patients to choose pharmacies where they would like to pick up their prescriptions.
NHS North East Essex expects to receive Release 2 of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) from April 2010 and has been working with chemists in encouraging patients to choose up to three branches where they want to collect their prescribed medicine from, E-Health Insider Primary Care reported.
These three establishments can include one pharmacy, a dispensing appliance contractor and sometimes a GP practice - which can also act as a dispenser.
A Primary Care Trust spokesperson told the news source: "Release 2 will be part of a phased introduction because GPs across north-east Essex have very different systems."
The new strategy is intended to see the need for paper prescriptions eliminated, with GPs being able to send information directly to pharmacies for the patient to pick up.
