Refer an Cardiac Physiologist
Thursday 29th October 2009
Those working in cardiac jobs need to make patients more aware of the risk of driving following a heart incident, one expert has suggested.
Dr Ravi Bajaj spoke at the 2009 Canadian Cardiovascular Congress (CSS) about the fragility of a patient's state when they have just been released from hospital after a cardiac event, saying that the congress has published clear guidelines addressing this.
He commented that "depending on a patient's condition, driving restrictions after hospitalisation range from 48 hours to a month", but his study showed "that less than half of cardiac patients received any instructions about driving at all".
The investigation found that 57 per cent of patients were not given such advice, with some of the remaining 43 per cent receiving information that was inconsistent with the CCS guidelines published in 2003.
Around 4,600 UK babies are born with heart defects every year, according to the British Heart Foundation, with 51 people dying from circulatory or heart disease in Scotland every day.
