Mushrooms can be particularly beneficial to health, according to one expert in a dietician job.
Dr Sarah Schenker explained that many of the nutrients the body needs to keep up its defences can be found in fungi, the Birmingham Mail reported.
New research has shown that the food can help ward off viruses and "should be an important component of a healthy and varied diet this winter", according to the specialist.
Mushrooms are rich in niacin, the news source added, helping to avoid high blood pressure by aiding the body to get rid of toxins, as well as being high in vitamin B, selenium, iron and anotioxidants.
It is recommended that fungi, which are also a low-calorie food, should be consumed as part of a diet including five fruit and vegetable portions every day.
The Food Standards Agency also emphasises the importance of a balanced diet, which should contain starchy foods - such as bread, rice and pasta - and protein-rich substances, as well as vegetables and fruit.
