Nurses to learn about phlebotomy on new course

GP Practices in the Bradford area will work together in training nurses in skills such as phlebotomy.
Anne Lowe, business manager at participating practice Mayfield Medical Centre, said the initiative came about as a result of the realisation of medical practitioners that there is a need for action to be taken to fill a certain skills gap, the Bradford Telegraph and Argus reported.
The new course has been endorsed by the University of Leeds' Academic Unit of Primary Care and funded by the NHS Trust of Bradford and Airedale.
Aside from phlebotomy, it will educate nurses in the fields of ear syringing, immunisation and vaccination, travel health, cervical cytology and more.
Ms Lowe added: "We knew there was a shortage of skilled nurses with General Practice experience in the area and a significant number … were due to retire in the next five years."
The role of those working in phlebotomy jobs is to clinically support healthcare workers by collecting blood from patients for analysis.
