The Wellcome Image Awards have been held for the tenth time, choosing the pictures that best portray "the wonder" of medical history and biomedical science.
Judges picked 19 images in total, including moments from science's past and artists' impressions, such as a digitally-enhanced drawing of a heart made from brass instruments.
The majority of the pictures, however, were bright photographs of multi-coloured microscopic organisms, for example a lung cancer cell and a capillary network.
Anatomist and biological anthropologist Dr Alice Roberts commented that "imaging and imagery can help scientists in many ways", for instance "to understand structures that are too small to be seen by the naked eye".
She added that it can also help those not intimately familiar with science to understand and value complicated ideas, which can also simply be "beautiful and awe-inspiring".
The Wellcome Trust is a UK charity, which spends around £600 million annually funding the work of biomedical scientists and researchers.
