The community pharmacy sector is evolving massively and those which do not adapt will be obsolete in a decade's time, according to one expert.
Speaking at news provider Chemist+Druggist's (C+D's) Keynote Conference at Birmingham's recent Pharmacy Show, the chief executive of the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee (PSNC) said "tremendous change" is currently taking place within the industry.
Sue Sharpe said that the sector is going through a "fundamental transition from being primarily providers of dispensed products to being primarily providers of services to patients".
According to C+D, her views were shared by other speakers at the event, with Alliance Healthcare chief Mike Smith suggesting that community pharmacies need to accept change and look for the ways they can benefit from it.
Discussions between NHS Employers and the PSNC were announced at the start of September, with the aim of assessing the current community pharmacy contractual framework and examining possible modifications.
