Plans approved for new hospital in Hartlepool

Hartlepool borough councillors have passed plans to build a new hospital on the outskirts of the town.
Council members voted 11 to one in favour of the proposal, the Peterlee Mail reported, with Labour member Shaun Cook commenting that "the positives far outweigh the negatives".
The £480 million project will go through to the next stage of approval despite fears it would be affected by the economic downturn.
A meeting between local health representatives and the Department of Health is scheduled to take place later this week.
This will be followed by another meeting with the secretary of state and a final decision is expected sometime next year.
In the councillor meeting, chief executive of the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust Alan Foster talked about his optimism that the plans will be approved by the government.
The new hospital is to replace Hartlepool and North Tees university hospitals - which already cater for 400,000 patients - and may create new hospital doctor jobs.
