Hundreds of new hospital jobs are to be created as part of NHS plans to expand Royal Bolton Hospital's (RBS's) maternity ward.
The Princess Anne unit is currently undergoing major construction work due to be finished before the end of 2011.
According to This Is Lancashire, the Making it Better scheme was initially said to create 160 new jobs, but recent changes mean the number will be considerably higher.
Making it Better's implementation manager Moira Roberts told the news provider that "the additional activity will need a huge investment in staff and
410 extra full time posts have been identified", thus bringing the total number of trust employees up to over 4,000.
RBS consequently expects the renovated ward to see births increase from 4,000 in 2008 to 6,000 in the coming years.
Among the improvements made by Making it Better will be five new delivery rooms, 22 extra beds, another operating theatre, 70 midwives and additional specialist consultants.
