Many community pharmacists 'not prescribing drugs'

A significant proportion of community pharmacists who have been trained to prescribe medication and are working in community pharmacies are not using their qualification.
This is according to research conducted by the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE), which found that 75 per cent of such medical professionals are not prescribing drugs, the Dispensing Doctors' Association (DDA) reports.
This figure was higher than that recorded for pharmacists working in medical practices and primary care, 60 per cent of whom were said to be using their qualifications.
Responding to the figures, the DDA suggested they may indicate that pharmacists can enjoy a more successful environment for expanding their professional endeavours by working in medical practices.
It added: "Maybe government should be moving pharmacists out of the retail setting and into the place where patients get their medical care."
The DDA serves a number of purposes, including representing the interests of dispensing doctors and their patients.
