Biomedical scientists are among those currently working on a project to develop a DNA Transistor.
The technology, which is being worked on by IBM, will enable researchers to pass DNA strands through nano-sized holes in computer-like chips in order to read the information they contain.
It is hoped that the sequencer will pave the way for scientists to read genetic information quickly and easily, ultimately leading to advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of health conditions.
"The technologies that make reading DNA fast, cheap and widely available have the potential to revolutionise bio-medical research and herald an era of personalised medicine," stated Gustavo Stolovitzky, a research scientist at IBM - a firm with operations in over 170 countries.
Ultimately, the DNA Transistor could improve medical care by identifying patients who would respond the best to certain treatments and those who would be most at risk of suffering an adverse reaction, he added.
