While the latest infection rate figures for hospitals in Scotland are positive, they are no reason to become complacent.
This is the view of health secretary Nicola Sturgeon, who made her remarks after the release of statistics indicating that cases of C difficile and MRSA fell between April and June, the Herald reports.
According to the data, there were 996 new cases of C difficile among people aged over 65 during the quarter.
This represented a fall from the 1,152 recorded during the previous three-month period.
Although C difficile infections can be prevented by following good hygiene practices, it is extremely contagious.
Meanwhile, cases of MRSA declined from 171 during the first quarter of 2009 to 145 between April and June.
While the figures are an indication that effective measures are in place regarding hospital hygiene, professionals working in the healthcare sector should not stop striving for further improvements, Ms Sturgeon said.
She added: "There is no room for complacency. I want us to continue this excellent progress as we drive to eliminate all avoidable infections from our hospitals."
