Cardiac rehab underused, study finds

Many eligible patients with heart problems in the UK do not receive cardiac rehabilitation, it has been suggested.
According to a study set to be published in the journal Heart, seven in ten such people do not get the service.
The report's authors claimed that programmes are too rigid and are often underfunded.
Cardiac rehabilitation is rarely seen as an important part of "contemporary comprehensive cardiac care", they say.
The researchers commented: "Cardiac rehabilitation remains grossly under-utilised despite its benefits.
"Improving access and equity of services is vital to [its] future, yet remains constrained by underfunded and inflexible programmes."
Earlier this year, the British Heart Foundation released research which suggested that two-thirds of heart attack survivors in Britain do not get sufficient follow-up advice and care.
Only 34 per cent of 83,500 heart attack victims it examined had participated in cardiac rehabilitation programmes after being discharged from hospital, the organisation revealed.
