State-of-the-art baby unit being built at Leicester Royal Infirmary

Work gets underway this week on a new specialist baby unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary.
Expected to take one year to build, the state-of-the-art facilities are part of a £9.3 million initiative by University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and a local father told the Leicester Mercury he was delighted to hear about the development.
"It is really good to hear about this," said Wayne Halifax. "It is very important to have good facilities."
The New Humberstone resident had to travel to Liverpool when his wife went into premature labour earlier this year as a result of there not being enough cots available in Leicestershire.
It is hoped the new unit - which will contain 24 specialist cots, with the room to expand to 36 - will stop cases like this from arising.
Leicester Royal Infirmary already offers a number of specialist baby services, with a newborn hearing screener currently carrying out checks.
