NHS Lanarkshire's Monklands General Hospital is taking part in a new initiative to promote hand hygiene.
According to the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser, the facility has positioned a number of six-foot high cardboard cut-outs on its premises, which warn visitors and staff to stop and clean their hands.
It is part of a series of campaigns being run by NHS Lanarkshire to emphasise the importance of hygiene as it seeks to reduce infections.
Nurse consultant Jan Clarkson commented: "A number of HAIs (healthcare associated infections) can be prevented by cleaning our hands properly and these cut-outs, together with other initiatives introduced, will promote good hand hygiene habits and save lives."
Hand hygiene has been high on the agenda for hospitals for a number of years, with a national programme launched to raise awareness across Scotland in January 2007.
Health Protection Scotland, which was behind the initiative, claimed it was the first of its kind in the UK.
