Refer an Podiatrist
Wednesday 30th September 2009
Despite the potential discomfort such items can cause, many women continue to wear high heeled shoes, a podiatrist has said.
Commenting on the issue, Lorraine Jones, podiatrist at the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists (SCP), claimed that nearly four in ten women (37 per cent) admit to wearing uncomfortable shoes as long as they are fashionable, the Metro reports.
She advised against this, pointing out that such behaviour can lead to foot health problems.
The expert said: "Over time, [wearing heels] exacerbates underlying problems such as bunions, thickened and ingrown nails, hammer toes, corns and hard skin."
Meanwhile, chartered physiotherapist Paula Coates pointed out that the way women walk when they don high heels is with their pelvis forwards and knees slightly bent.
If this is done on a regular basis, it can lead to tightness in the hamstrings, shortened calf muscles and distortion in the lower spine, among other things, she added.
A professional body and trade union for registered podiatrists, the SCP claims to represent around 10,000 people.
