Some strokes 'preceded by warning'

A minority of strokes are preceded by a "warning stroke", the findings of a new study indicate.
Conducted by a team at the University of Western Ontario, the research found that one in eight such incidents are preceded by a transient ischemic attack (TIA).
The results, which have been published in the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, were based on an analysis of all people at Ontario hospitals who were diagnosed as having had strokes over a period of four years.
According to the researchers, other studies show that up to 80 per cent of strokes after TIA can be prevented if risk factors are managed intensively.
The team stated: "These results illustrate the need for better risk assessment tools for preventing strokes before they occur."
They added that any patient who experiences even a minor stroke should get to an emergency room as soon as possible.
A condition that occurs when blood supply to the brain is disturbed, strokes affect around 111,000 each year in the UK, NHS figures suggest.
