Refer an Biomedical Scientist
Friday 25th September 2009
A famous biomedical scientist has been praised for his work in the field by the head of the school he used to attend.
Hugh Ouston of Robert Gordon's College in Aberdeen lauded the accomplishments of Professor Ian Frazer as he returned to his old learning facility for its annual Founder's Day celebrations, the Press and Journal reports.
He told the publication: "He has achieved unbelievable things in medicine and had an impact on the future health of women worldwide."
Professor Frazer developed the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, Cervarix, which was designed to prevent cervical cancer.
An immunisation programme utilising the HPV medication was launched across the UK in September last year, with approximately 90 per cent of schoolgirls in the scientist's native Scotland having received it since then.
All girls aged between 12 and 13 and 17 and 18 in England were offered the vaccine in the year following the launch, with the intention of rolling it out to the rest of female children in education by 2011.
