Register as an Dietitian
Wednesday 23rd September 2009
A particular diet has been linked to reduced risk of the development of a number of medical conditions, including arthritis and Alzheimer's.
Scientists from the University of Southampton reviewed data on anti-inflammatory diets - which are rich in fruit, vegetables, oily fish and spices, among other things - and found a correlation between diet and certain diseases.
Chronic inflammation is caused by an over-active immune system and it is thought to be responsible for a range of health complaints.
In an article in the British Journal Of Nutrition, research leader Professor Philip Calder said: "What seems to happen is that these nutrients dampen the production of the chemicals that trigger inflammatory processes."
Recently, a team at the Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans suggested that eating oily fish can reduce the risks of heart failure by a third.
The findings were welcomed by Linda Main, dietician at the British Heart Foundation, who said: "These findings could be a radical way of cutting heart attacks."
