Radiographers to join crackdown on drug smugglers

Radiographers will participate in a new government crackdown on drug smuggling.
On-duty specialists from the NHS will be involved in the UK Border Agency (UKBA) initiative, the Guardian reports.
Under the terms of the plans, radiographers will advise customs officials as to whether X-ray images taken at airports reveal the storing of drugs in suspects.
Currently, trials are taking place involving X-ray specialists at Bart's hospital in London - which has a history dating back to 1123.
The medical professionals are being sent images of potential heroin and cocaine runners.
Live trials of the scheme are expected to begin within months.
The UKBA refused to comment on the tests. However, it confirmed it continues to roll out new technology designed to help protect the country's borders.
It added: "Special cameras identify passengers concealing items, hi-tech machines detect traces of illegal substances on people and carbon dioxide detectors at ports detect illegal immigrants being smuggled into the UK."
