Refer an Audiologist
Wednesday 16th September 2009
A woman who was born deaf is to undergo a procedure which should enable her to hear.
Julie Davis will have a cochlea implant, which is sometimes referred to as a 'bionic ear', fitted, the North-West Evening Mail reports.
The 34-year-old is to have the procedure at Bradford Teaching Hospital, which is run by Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
It is hoped that the operation, which will cost the NHS around £25,000, will give her 70 per cent hearing.
Ms Davis said: "My hearing really deteriorated ... and earlier this year the audiologist at Furness General Hospital in Barrow classed me as profoundly deaf."
She is scheduled to have the procedure in November.
In order to thank the hospital, she is raising money for its voluntary support group.
Employing more than 5,000 staff members, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has an annual budget of around £230 million.
