High street pharmacist Boots has announced it is to offer a course of three jabs to protect against cervical cancer for £405.
The chemist will provide the Cervarix vaccine to those aged between 18 and 54 who are not eligible to receive the treatment on the NHS.
Girls aged between 12 and 18 currently get the jabs for free as part of a schools vaccination programme, but Boots medical director Dr Graham Marshall said that older women could also "benefit" from the injections.
He added: "Pharmacists are well placed to offer this service with convenient high street locations and a welcoming, familiar atmosphere."
Cervarix offers protection against two strains of the humanpapilloma virus, which causes the majority of cervical cancer cases.
Figures from Cancer Research UK show that 2,873 women were diagnosed with this type of cancer in the UK in 2006, while 941 died from the illness the following year.
