Biomedical scientists working at the University of Rochester Medical Centre in the US have been devising a new treatment to reduce the sleep disruption suffered by some menopausal women.
The team discovered that a substance which is generally used to treat seizures called gabapentin is able to improve the quality of sleep in such patients.
In addition, the drug is said to be able to alleviate hot flushes.
Commenting on its benefits, Michael Yurcheshen, assistant professor of neurology and the lead author of the article, said: "Gabapentin improves sleep quality but does not have the potential dependency problems of some other sleep medications and does not involve the use of hormone replacement therapy."
He added that it has minimal side effects, which makes it a "very attractive" treatment to patients.
An integrated academic health facility, the University of Rochester Medical Centre comprises a number of facilities, including the School of Medicine and Dentistry and the James P Wilmot Cancer Centre.
