Wednesday 9th September 2009
A biomedical scientist has been handed an award in recognition of his contribution to the field.
Johnson & Johnson has honoured Axel Ullrich by presenting him with the 2009 Dr Paul Janssen Award for Biomedical Research.
The scientist has been involved in the development of a number of medicines, including Herceptin, which is used to target a specific type of breast cancer.
Harlan Weisman, the chief science and technology officer of medical devices at Johnson & Johnson, stated: "Dr Ullrich's pioneering research translated genomics-based discoveries into new treatments that improve the lives of millions of patients."
He added that the accolade recognises his commitment to advancing the field of translational research.
Dr Ullrich was presented with the award during a recent ceremony at the Dr Paul Janssen Research Centre in Beerse, Belgium.
Opened in 2004, the centre is part of the Janssen Pharmaceutica site and 300 researchers work in it.
