Register as an Dietitian
Tuesday 8th September 2009
Schemes which are designed to reduce childhood obesity have been backed by a dietician.
According to a report in the Sun, the pilot initiatives, which are being run by health trusts such as those in Nottingham and Rotherham, see youngsters sent on residential courses which last for six weeks.
The treatment costs around £3,000 per child.
Commenting on the schemes, Paul Sacher, a dietician at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital for children, said they are a positive move.
He added: "If nothing is done when children are small, then there is likely to be a lot more trouble in the future - so this is a huge step forward.
"40 per cent of obese children become obese adults, so these courses are a good idea."
Mr Sacher also works for MEND, which provides courses for overweight youngsters.
An organisation dedicated to reducing childhood and family obesity levels, MEND describes itself as a social enterprise and it offers free healthy living programmes.
