Hospital offers new cardiac service

A hospital in Chertsey has announced the launch of a new cardiac service.
St Peter's Hospital now invites relatives of male and female patients under the age of 55 and 65 respectively for an assessment of their risk factors.
The Family Ashford and St Peter's Prevention Project is to be offered to the families of those admitted to the facility with premature heart disease.
Funded by the NHS, the initiative is the result of a collaboration with the Surrey Heart and Stroke Network.
According to Dr Martha Wrigley, cardiac research co-ordinator for the trust, this is an exclusive service, which includes a two-year programme of clinic sessions.
She said it is a nurse-led scheme and is supported by doctors and GPs and pointed out that cardiovascular disease is the cause of around 40 per cent of UK deaths, leading the hospital to assess relatives of those who already have the condition.
"We are keen to find out whether the cardiac experience of one person can be the catalyst to preventing coronary disease in close members of their family," she commented.
The trusts of Ashford and St Peter's hospitals merged in 1998 to form the current body overseeing the project.
