The government should resist any temptation to reduce the workforce of the NHS, it has been claimed.
According to a report by the NHS Confederation, the UK's health service is facing a severe contraction in its finances, with a real terms cut of between £8 billion and £10 billion likely in the three years from 2011.
Michael Sobanja, chief executive of NHS Alliance, said that there should not be major cuts to the number of people employed by the NHS, including those with hospital doctor jobs.
He stated: "Health service finances, particularly from 2011 onwards, are going to be very much more [strained] than they have been [over] the previous ten years and how we cope with that will be very important."
Mr Sobanja added that there needs to be a debate about such things as the government's policy on NHS pay rises and pension arrangements.
Politicians need to be "absolutely clear" concerning what their levels of investment into the health service would be, he suggested.
