Podiatrist involved in diabetes initiative

In a bid to improve services for diabetic patients in Norfolk, a podiatrist is to take part in a new initiative.
NHS Norfolk is funding a sustained training programme for foot screening in the central area of the county which aims to increase the skills of up to 100 nurses each year who perform foot examinations on diabetic patients, the Lowestoft Journal reports.
The training programme will be delivered by a principal podiatrist in diabetes.
It is hoped that the project will help avoid some of the complications patients can suffer as a result of the condition, including limb amputation.
A spokesperson for the health authority said: "Diabetes care has been agreed as one of the priorities within the NHS Norfolk's Children's Commissioning Strategy."
He added that a review of the services was held recently and a number of actions are underway to further develop and improve the services on offer.
Formed in October 2006, NHS Norfolk provides services to people living in most of the county, excluding the area around Great Yarmouth.
