The quality of nursing care is likely to become just as important as scientific advances and breakthroughs in technology, it has been claimed.
According to the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), values such as compassion and empathy will be central to patient care in the future.
The group said that the recruitment of nurses in England, Scotland and Wales should focus on these qualities and insisted that those entering the profession must be inspired to deliver quality care.
It added that nurses must be able to exert significant influence over the direction of patient care in the country and use their skills across the healthcare sector.
Janet Davies, executive director of nursing and service delivery at the RCN, said: "The NHS was built on care, compassion and empathy.
"In order to deliver high quality nursing care, we need a good mixture of skills, nursing leadership and, above all, enough well-trained nurses to do the job."
The RCN has recently added feeds on the social networking site Twitter to provide comment on various issues affecting nurses and the healthcare sector in general.
