Further action is required on behalf of restaurants in order to ensure children can eat healthier away from home, according to one expert.
Maria Caranfa, dietician and director of Mintel Menu Insights, called for steps to be taken to provide better options, Bounty reports.
A survey by Mintel revealed that just 30 per cent of parents think their children eat nutritious foods when dining out, with unhealthy options such as hotdogs and cheeseburgers appearing on many menus aimed at younger people.
"Restaurants dabble in healthier menus for kids, but there's still significant work to be done, said Ms Caranfa.
The research company advised parents to be aware of the nutritional value of the food served to children, adding that healthy options introduced by eateries should appeal to kids.
It comes after Weight Watchers revealed that Britons are typically putting on an extra pound each year, but failing to realise how overweight they are becoming.
