Wednesday 26th August 2009
A man has spoken out against what he sees as the ignoring of hygiene issues by hospital visitors.
John Palethorpe, chairman of Improve North Yorks NHS Services, claims that most people entering hospitals to see friends and family disregard the alcohol hand gels at the entrance to wards, the Scarborough Evening News reports.
He is therefore calling on people to play their part in stopping the spread of infections in medical centres.
The campaigner said: "The government has spent billions on trying to get rid of MRSA and C difficile and we're in the middle of a swine flu pandemic - and yet people are not doing it. The public needs to understand just how important this is."
He added that, while hospital staff are doing their bit, it is now time for the public to take action.
Meanwhile, Teresa Fenech, director of nursing at Scarborough and North East Yorkshire NHS Healthcare Trust, said that the organisation has been working "extremely hard" to control and prevent infections.
Formed in 1992, the trust provides medical services for a local population of around 240,000.
