Register as an Dietitian
Tuesday 25th August 2009
A dietician has responded to new figures showing an increase in weight problems among Britons.
According to statistics produced by WeightWatchers, people in the UK are gaining an average of nearly a pound a year.
It suggested that the typical weight of members starting its programme has risen from 12.3 stone in 1989 to 13.7 stone at present.
Commenting on the research, WeightWatchers' dietician Zoe Hellman stated: "It is natural to judge ourselves based on comparisons of those around us. So unfortunately the more people who are overweight and obese, the more normal it becomes."
She added that this phenomenon makes being overweight more acceptable, reducing the pressure on people to make their lifestyles healthier.
Indeed, it could also mean that those who are above the recommended weight fail to recognise that they have a problem at all, she concluded.
Established over 35 years ago, Weightwatchers claims to have helped millions of people in the UK to lose weight.
