A team of biomedical scientists has developed a new test for the cancer mesothelioma.
According to the researchers, the method is more sensitive than current techniques and could speed up the process of diagnosis.
Caused by previous exposure to asbestos, mesothelioma is a cancer which affects the cells lining the walls of the lungs or abdomen.
The team, which is based at Oxford University, focused on distinguishing the condition as a cause of fluids building up in the cavity surrounding the lungs. The findings were reported in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
In their research, the experts claimed that people with the cancer had levels of the protein meothelin which were nearly six times higher than in those who did not have the condition.
Researcher Dr Helen Davies said: "This study suggests a way for clinicians to more readily identify cases of mesothelioma from the start."
She added that earlier diagnosis of mesothelioma means that patients can receive interventions more quickly.
